Who is at Risk for Developing Diabetes?
There are several known risk factors for the development of Type 2 diabetes (previously
known as Adult Onset). These include being overweight or obese (having a Body Mass Index "BMI" of 25 or more), physical
inactivity, family history of diabetes, high blood pressure, good cholesterol (HDL) less than 35 and/or triglycerides of more
that 250, a history of "pre-diabetes, or anyone who is a member of a high risk population (African American, Latino,
Native American, Asian, or Pacific Islander). In addition to the above risk factors, women who have delivered a baby weighing 9 pounds or more, have had gestational diabetes,
or women with PCOS are also at risk. If you have one or more of these risk factors you should be screened for diabetes even
if you feel well. American Diabetes Association: www.diabetes.org, Clinical Practice Recommendations, 2009)
